Already an underground sensation, a high-tech thriller for the wireless age that explores the unthinkable consequences of a computer program running without human control—a daemon—designed to dismantle society and bring about a new world order

Technology controls almost everything in our modern-day world, from remote entry on our cars to access to our homes, from the flight controls of our airplanes to the movements of the entire world economy. Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can’t always be said for the people who design them.

Matthew Sobol was a legendary computer game designer—the architect behind half-a-dozen popular online games. His premature death depressed both gamers and his company’s stock price. But Sobol’s fans aren’t the only ones to note his passing. When his obituary is posted online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events intended to unravel the fabric of our hyper-efficient, interconnected world. With Sobol’s secrets buried along with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed at every turn, it’s up to an unlikely alliance to decipher his intricate plans and wrest the world from the grasp of a nameless, faceless enemy—or learn to live in a society in which we are no longer in control. . . .

Computer technology expert Daniel Suarez blends haunting high-tech realism with gripping suspense in an authentic, complex thriller in the tradition of Michael Crichton, Neal Stephenson, and William Gibson.

Nylon Angel by Marianne de Pierres (Orbit) - A huge thanks to Marianne for this!
In a world where the rich live behind the safety of a giant fortress wall and everyone else can go to hell, Parrish Plessis has learnt some useful survival tactics. Like don't cross Jamon Hondo - unless you want to be dead by the morning. But heck, what's a girl supposed to do when the one chance she may have of escaping from his grubby, stinking paws presents itself? Anyway, it's hard to be a saint in a city, and Parrish Plessis is sick of doing what she's told. Tonight, she's going to take her chance. Because she can't face tomorrow. NYLON ANGEL is the first Parrish Plessis novel. She will be back. When you've met her, you'll understand why.

And here are some books I got the other day from the local used book shop, somewhere I'll be going more regularly!

Foundation is a book that will get read soon, mainly because it's the shortest of the lot :) I'm also hoping to get Eon read in the near future with Marrow and Stranger in a Strange Land to follow.

I'm aiming to alternate my reading between books I buy and ones I get through from publishers to review. I'm over halfway through Infoquake at the moment and loving it, I wouldn't be surprised if I finished it either today or tomorrow and then a review to follow shortly. Next book on the list is a toss up between Evil Ways and Earth Ascendant, not sure what sort of mood I'm in yet :)

Ooooh you've got beauties there, Mark! The only one in the bunch I've read is Greg Bear's Eon, and it's incredible! Very nice! :-)
