Coming up in April: A Sci-Fi Appreciation Month

I'm a sci-fi fan through and through, and while I enjoy fantasy it usually takes a back seat to whatever sci-fi books I have on the stack. So when Mark Newton posted last year on Why SF is Dying (and the follow-up post) I started to think about this and how I felt about what he was saying. There isn't too much to go into really, I think sci-fi has - and will - take a back seat to fantasy, but I don't think it's dying.

While I'm never going to change the world with this blog, I can spread the word on sci-fi books that I love - and that's exactly what I thought I'd do. With the help of fellow bloggers, authors and publishers I'm running an Sci-Fi Appreciation Month during April where myself and others will be posting various things on sci-fi, from reviews to guest posts, to show that there really is plenty out there to enjoy and love. I'm still putting the schedule together, but suffice to say I'm very excited about it!

What I also wanted to do was open this up to you guys, the readers of the blog. What do you enjoy about sci-fi? What are you favourite books and authors? What would you recommend without hesitation, both to hardened veterans and newcomers to the genre? If you want to participate in this (which would be great!) then please email me on mark@walkerofworlds.com. This also goes out to any bloggers, authors and publishers that have anything they'd like to contribute - the more the merrier!

I don't think sci-fi is dying - and with my sci-fi book coming out this fall, I certainly hope it's not dying!

Fantasy shouldn't have limits, but it often does. When Terry Brooks was at his height, it seems all of the fantasy books were written in a similar vein.

Sci-fi is limitless. I also see sci-fi as double genre - a story in one genre with elements that make it sci-fi. (Think Firefly, which is a western sci-fi.) I think that adds to the depth of sci-fi writing.

Will be following along as you celebrate sci-fi month!

Sci-Fi month sounds like fun!

I saw that article about the 'death' of sci-fi too. And like Alex I was like.... I don't think so cause I am writing Sci-Fi!

I am actually writing a Sci-Fi series; Space Trippers. And have 3 books out already.

And a real trend now is Steam Punk which is Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
So definitely the genre isn't going away anytime soon. Thank Goodness. ;o}

Can't wait for April. How can we participate? A. Lightbourne

I believe that sci-fi's the genre that risk the most.
I really can't see it dying anytime soon.
But it's important to show the old guys and the new ones out there. People like me are eager to know about them. Buy them. Read them.
Talking is the first step to sell. It's free publicity.
I'm eager to April.
Thank u. :)

It's interesting that you say that scifi takes a backseat to fantasy, because I've always had the impression that it was the other way around. I'm actually an avid fantasy reader who has been making an effort lately to start reading scifi but I seem to come across more scifi readers then fantasy ones. Though I suppose that the recent increase in popularity PNR, which can be classified as fantasy has helped tip the scales a bit.
