I think that, for a while in the Nineties, written sci-fi teetered on the brink of losing its audience. I believe that's why some of the most successful sci-fi books today are good old-fashioned space operas and adventure stories, why clockwork-and-magic machines in a simpler, less confusing world, are all the rage, and why military sci-fi with barely more technological sophistication than 'Starship Troopers' is growing apace. It's a really interesting post and makes some very valid points, I'd highly recommend checking it out.
