In AD 2600 the human race is finally beginning to realize its full potential. Hundreds of colonized planets scattered across the galaxy host a multitude of prosperous and wildly diverse cultures. Genetic engineering has pushed evolution far beyond nature’s boundaries, defeating disease and producing extraordinary spaceborn creatures. Huge fleets of sentient trader starships thrive on the wealth created by the industrialization of entire star systems. And throughout inhabited space the Confederation Navy keeps the peace. A true golden age is within our grasp.
But now something has gone catastrophically wrong. On a primitive colony planet a renegade criminal’s chance encounter with an utterly alien entity unleashes the most primal of all our fears. An extinct race which inhabited the galaxy aeons ago called it “The Reality Dysfunction”. It is the nightmare which has prowled beside us since the beginning of history.

The ancient menace has finally escaped from Lalonde, shattering the Confederation’s peaceful existence. Those who succumbed to it have acquired godlike powers, but now follow a far from divine gospel as they advance inexorably from world to world.
On planets and asteroids individuals battle for survival against the strange and brutal forces unleashed upon the universe. Governments teeter on the brink of anarchy, the Confederation Navy is dangerously overstretched, and a dark messiah prepares to invoke his own version of the final Night.
In such desperate times the last thing the galaxy needs is a new and terrifyingly powerful weapon. Yet Dr Alkad Mzu is determined to retrieve the Alchemist – so she can complete her thirty-year-old vendetta to slay a star. Which means Joshua Calvert has to find Dr Mzu and bring her back before the Alchemist can be reactivated.
But he’s not alone in the chase, and there are people on both sides who have their own ideas about how to sue the ultimate doomsday device.

The Confederation is starting to collapse politically and economically, allowing the 'possessed' to infiltrate more worlds. Quinn Dexter is loose on Earth, destroying the giant arcologies one at a time. As Louise Kavanagh tries to track him down, she manages to acquire some strange and powerful allies whose goal does not quite match her own.
The campaign to liberate Mortonridge from the possessed degenerates into a horrendous land battle of the type not seen by humankind for six hundred years. Then some of the protagonists escape in a very unexpected direction . . .
Joshua Calvert and Syrinx now fly their starships on a mission to find the Sleeping God -- which an alien race believes holds the key to finally overthrowing the possessed.

No need for persuasion! Thanks, keeping fingers crossed. :D

Hmm. These descriptions sound VERY familiar to Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga--at least, to Pandora's Star & Judas Unchained.
Alien menace released into the galaxy, scientists developing super weapons to defeat it, a group determined to get revenge for damage done to a star...not sure how I feel about these similarities.

Unfortunately, it's not quite like that. The main theme of the NDT is less about sci-fi than one would hope in the hard sci-fi series. It's so huge in scope lots of fascinating material gets left alone just when it gets interesting.
Still, the Conferation Universe is breath taking in its imagination and sorely needs more stories written about it.
Check out Second Chance at Eden for a collection of short stories that based in this same Universe and well worth reading even if you've never read NDT.
I'm in!
This would be a great chance for me to read Hamilton's work as our library doesnt have them in.
Sounds great....but am I missing something..? Do you have to DO anything (apart from email Mark!) to be entered into this competition?
(I love this trilogy, btw, and can't wait for Evolutionary Void)
Nope, just an email :) I guess giveaway would be a better word to use :)
I couldn't withstand to take part.
I know the name of the author but never read a Peter F. Hamilton book.
By the way a great idea for a giveaway!!!
A great prize!
I already own the trilogy so good luck to the participants.
I also already own the Trilogy and would encourage anyone who reads this blog to enter the contest and if you don't win, RUN (DO NOT WALK!) to the bookstore to pick up the trilogy. I first read them on my 14 hour flight to Melbourne in 2000 from LAX and walked around like a geek in Australia carrying around "The Naked God" because I had to see how the whole thing ended.
I've re-read the entire series twice and it is simply stunning, confirming Peter F, Hamilton as my favorite genre writer.
Peter Hamilton's books are full of praise for paedophilia (Orion and Mellanie, Joshua and Louise, Jezzabella and Capone), since at the end they get married and have children.
Disgusting!
I agree with the last post. How can they even publish a book with adult having sex with innocent children?
Only Mark Charan Newton is worse than that since his hero, who is having sex with older ladies, is only 10 years old!!!
First mediocre sci-fi at best and then that. Read Vernor Vinge instead.
