What I Read in 2014

2014 was my greatest reading year yet: 121 books. For me, that’s absolutely massive, and it’s an accomplishment I doubt I’d be able to beat without some serious – and conscious – effort. So, how do these books break down?

65% of books I read were Sci-Fi, which comes as no surprise considering it’s my genre of choice. The other 35% breaks down as follows: 16% Urban Fantasy, 4% Fantasy, 4% Horror, and the other 11% made up of Mil-SF, Mil-Fantasy, Thriller, Fiction, and Non-Fiction. I’m happy with my reading spread, keeping Sci-Fi mainly in the lead and throwing some other genres to shake things up every now and then.

90% of the books I read last year were by male authors, and only 10% (12 books) by female authors. Considering my reading preference is Sci-Fi I’m really not surprised by this. I read some really good books by female authors, and I’ll continue to do so this year, but doubt there will be a large increase (if any) in this stat by year-end 2015.

30% of books I read were review copies supplied by the publisher, with 70% personal copies. 37% of books I read were released in 2014 – a healthy number for me, though I did make a concerted effort to read more currently in the latter half of the year. Considering I like re-reading novels only 26% were re-reads, with 74% brand new to me.

I’m happy with my reading, and I’ll keep on picking up the books that appeal to me – it’s the only way I’ll enjoy it, and I won’t let reading become a chore again.

As for my favourite reads of 2014, check back again for the top ten!
