What I Read in 2016

what-i-read-in-2016-featured

Another year in reading to look back, on what a year it’s been. I’ve surpassed my previous best of 128 reads last year and got up to 135 books read this year. I’m not quite sure how I managed that as it works out to be a book every 2.7 days! This was the year where I decided to read mainly science fiction, and to pick up books based solely on if I liked the sound of it. Read on for the stats…

Once again, the genre breakdown of what I read is pretty much as expected: dominated by science fiction, which accounts for 82% of my reading. Fantasy comes in next at a mere 8%, with the other genres (horror, fiction, urban fantasy) all coming way down the bottom of the list. I may see about adding more genre diversity this year, though ultimately I read what I like the sound of, and that is all-too-often science fiction.

The male-to-female author ratio is once again heavily slanted at 91% male, 9% female. Given my choice of genre this isn’t too surprising, and ultimately it’s down to what I see and what appeals to me. As this stat has barely altered for the past few years I really can’t see this changing without considerable and conscious effort. However, it all comes back to my preferences – if a book doesn’t appeal to me it’s highly unlikely I’ll pick it up, regardless of the author’s gender.

Reading of review copies was down again this year, to 22%, and I can easily see why: I receive a lot less unsolicited review copies nowadays, and generally only request ones I genuinely want to read (and more often than not these are through Netgalley).

Current (2016) release reads were down to 32% from 40% last year, and re-reads were also down to 14% from 20%. It turns out that this year was a year I read mostly new-to-me novels, though the majority of these are from one of my main aims for the year: reading completed series which I blasted through (more on those in another post).

As ever, I’m happy with my reading and can’t say I didn’t read anything I wanted to, though I do have a backlog of books that I’m still hoping to get through early this year. No real goals for 2017, just read whatever takes my fancy!

A where would a post like this be without a full list of what I read in 2016? Look no further! Check it out below, as well as a nice handy image with all the book covers.
