What I Read In 2017

2017 was a funny year for my reading. I had big plans for reading more, and for trying to fit specific books into my schedule, but for a variety of reasons things didn’t quite work out that way. I read a total of 110 books over the year, which is down from what I’ve read over the past few years, but I’m fine with that, and may even continue the trend in the coming year too. But anyway, read on for the stats…

Genre Breakdown

Sci-fi 74.5% | Fantasy 15.5% | Horror 5.5% | Urban Fantasy 2.7% | Fiction 1.8%

Not too surprising here, though I did read more Fantasy in 2017, but not by much. This is a stat that will rarely change significantly, simply because Science Fiction is almost always my go-to choice.

Author Breakdown

Male 88.6% | Female 11.4%

Only ever slightly different from last year where it was a 91/9 split, and again not a conscious decision. Looking at books based on their title, cover, and synopsis is pretty much all I do when it comes to choosing what to read, though I do have a core of authors that I almost always try and read new releases from.

Source Breakdown

Review Copies 16.4% | Owned Copies 83.6%

Down again from last year, though I think this is because I haven’t reviewed anywhere near as much as I used to, and this year’s occurrences made my time for reviewing even less. I’m hoping 2018 will see that change somewhat.

Year Breakdown

2017 32% | Pre-2017 68%

I’m still catching up with some books I missed from previous years, but I’m also doing a lot of re-reading of series books ready for the latest. Funnily enough, this stat was exactly the same last year!

Ratings Breakdown

5* 27% | 4* 58% | 3*12% | 2* 2% | 1* 1%

I thought I’d look at ratings this year as I generally find myself liking a lot of what I read and question whether I’m judging books fairly. Given the Goodreads/Amazon rating system, I can’t see much of this changing, though if I started to rate out of 10 I think I’d see a lot of books hit the 7/10 rating rather than bumping up to 8/10.

I’ve no regrets as to what I read in 2017, though I think I’m going to be a little more rigorous in choosing what I read going forward – it’ll be interesting to see just what happens. And, of course, where would a post like this be without a full list of what I read in 2017? Look no further! Check it out below, as well as a nice handy image with all the book covers.
